She heard the soldiers singing the song "John Brown's Body", and was taken with the strong marching beat. She wrote the words the next day: " I awoke in the grey of the morning, and as I lay waiting for dawn, the long lines of the desired poem began to entwine themselves in my mind, and I said to myself, I must get up and write these verses, lest I fall asleep and forget them! So I sprang out of bed and in the dimness found an old stump of a pen, which I remembered using the day before. I scrawled the verses almost without looking at the paper." 16. DIXIE Another American folk song that became the Civil War anthem of the South. 17. AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL A favorite patriotic song which many believed could have been our National Anthem written by Katharyne Lee Bates in 1893 Quote: "one day some of the other teachers and I decided to go on a trip to 14,000 ft. Pikes Peak. We hired a prairie wagon. Near the top we had to leave the wagon and go the rest of the way on mules. I was very tired. But when I saw the view I felt great joy. All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse".
