Lyrics by Julia Howe - Music by William Steffe. This hymn was born during the Civil War, when Howe visited a Union Army camp on the Potomac River near Washington, D.C. She heard the soldiers singing the song "John Brown's Body", and was taken with the strong marching beat. She wrote the words the next day: " I awoke in the grey of the morning, and as I lay waiting for dawn, the long lines of the desired poem began to entwine themselves in my mind, and I said to myself, I must get up and write these verses, lest I fall asleep and forget them! So I sprang out of bed and in the dimness found an old stump of a pen, which I remembered using the day before. I scrawled the verses almost without looking at the paper." 16. DIXIE Another American folk song that became the Civil War anthem of the South. 17. AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL A favorite patriotic song which many believed could have been our National Anthem written by Katharyne Lee Bates in 1893 Quote: "one day some of the other teachers and I decided to go on a trip to 14,000 ft. Pikes Peak. We hired a prairie wagon. Near the top we had to leave the wagon and go the rest of the way on mules. I was very tired. But when I saw the view I felt great joy. All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse". |
